Taimen Headwaters Expedition

A couple of years ago we began exploring the overlooked and inaccessible headwaters of this river system in a remote corner of Northern Mongolia.  Our first expeditions exceeded our expectations: abundant Taimen of all sizes in a relatively small river and its tributary streams, and a stunning wilderness setting.  We stumbled on one of the most pristine Taimen fisheries left in Mongolia.  As well as holding good populations of mature Taimen, these headwaters provide important Taimen spawning and nursery habitat.  To protect the location from unwanted attention while we are in the process of establishing a conservation partnership with the local herders we have referred to the river as “River X”: so you won’t see the name of the river on our website.

For 2009 we are planning two expeditions to fish these Taimen headwaters.  The journey will begin with a boat trip and then trekking two days on horseback or on foot into the headwaters.  We will spend a day or two fly-fishing on the tributaries before commencing our float trip out to the trail-head. The river here is deep in the wilderness, and the valley is thickly forested, with no vehicle access.  All the equipment and rafts will be packed in by horse; this is a wilderness fishing trip, camping in tents, expect rugged conditions and spectacular fishing.

Expedition dates for 2009
June 11th to 23rd, and September 10th to 23rd  (to be confirmed)
