We operate our own fly-fishing camps and float trips in Mongolia; fly fishing for taimen . You have the choice of comfortable ger camp-based fly-fishing weeks, or rafting float trips for the more adventurous. Both types of trip offer outstanding guided taimen fishing and a unique experience of Mongolia.

For active travelers we offer rafting, horse riding and trekking. We can guide you on a moderate trek or challenging wilderness expedition. You can raft through beautiful valleys, ride hardy Mongolian horses, or hike on nomad trails through the mountains of Northern Mongolia - experience nomadic life, climb mountains, fly fish remote mountain streams and lakes, and visit reindeer herders in the taiga wilderness.

Fly Fishing in Mongolia

Mongolia is a unique fly-fishing destination where you can fly fish for taimen, the largest member of the salmon family. Highlights of fly-fishing in Mongolia include clear rivers, abundant fish, tranquil fishing, stunning surroundings and unique culture. Not to be overlooked is the exquisite dry-fly fishing for Lenok Trout and Grayling. Fly fishing for Taimen is strictly catch-and-release with barbless hooks.

The average sized Taimen are around 28 to 30 inches long (70 - 80 cm) and 10 to 12 lbs, and there will be many opportunities at trophy Taimen over 40 inches (100 cm). Small groups ensure plentiful Taimen waters for all, and prevent over-fishing. Taimen are an aggressive fish that feed on anything that they can fit in their mouth, from minnows and fry to mature grayling and trout, or even small birds or rodents.

Lenok (Brachymstax lenok) are the Mongolian equivalent of a trout, distantly related to Char, generally around 15 to 20 inches (2 to 3 lb) they can grow to over 30 inches in Mongolia. These are an exciting sport fish. Grayling are plentiful in Mongolia’s waters and there are in fact four sub-species here.

We fish for Taimen mainly with surface flies on floating lines. Streamers fished with a sink-tip line are also effective, especially in the deep pools. A 9 ft rod for 8 or 9 wt lines is generally recommended for Taimen fishing, but salmon fishermen may prefer a 15 ft 10 wt rod. For Lenok and Grayling a 4, 5 or 6 weight rod and floating line is suitable. We will provide Taimen flies; however, you should bring a selection of dry-flies for Lenok and Grayling. Mongolia Taimen Float Trips

Our float fishing trips take us down one of the most beautiful, and un-discovered, river valleys in Mongolia; carved through ancient limestone and granite bedrock, the valley is lined by spectacular cliffs and rock pinnacles. In its upper reaches, the river flows through an inaccessible canyon, accessed only by torturous jeep tracks down rocky ravines, on horse-back, or by raft. The river meanders along the canyon floor, from cliff to cliff, creating deep pools, long runs, and a few easy rapids (Grade II). In places the valley opens out into broad grassland, flanked by steep hillsides and larch woodland; these pastures are typically used as autumn grazing, or as hay meadows, by the local nomadic herders.

We will float the river at a leisurely pace, taking plenty of time to fish the best pools and runs. The drift-boats are inflatable rafts, equipped with rowing frame and casting seats for two anglers. Your raft will be rowed by one of the camp’s Mongolian or Western guides, who will show you the good fishing holes, select good flies and lures, and help you to land and photograph your catch.

Each night we will set up our wilderness camp on the banks of the river. The camp is comfortable, with 3-person mountain tents for two to share, a dining tent, camp chairs and tables, toilet tent and simple shower. We pride ourselves on serving good food on all our trips; meals will include a range of tasty Mongolian and European dishes. Beer, soft drinks, and wine with dinner, are included in the trip cost.

Mongolia Float Fishing Trip

Our 6-day float fishing trip gives access to rarely fished inaccessible waters. Floating an average of 10 km a day allows us plenty of time to fish the best pools as we travel through the magnificent scenery of the Delger River canyon. The boats are equipped with casting seats for two fly fishermen and each is rowed by one of our guides. These trips are for adventurous anglers who enjoy comfortable camping, remote travel and exciting fishing in beautiful locations.

Getting there

The camps are located three to five hours drive from the provincial airport, which itself is only an hour and a half flight from the capital Ulaanbaatar. New for 2007 we have the option to fly direct to camp by chartered Cessna Grand Caravan.

The fishing

We will fish for taimen, lenok and grayling. The spring trips are timed to coincide with the period when taimen are hungry and aggressive after spawning and take readily on the surface, while in the Fall as the temperatures drop taimen become more active as they fatten up for the winter. We’ll catch several feisty taimen from the boats each day and have opportunities for hogs over 120cm on every trip. More information

Taimen Fly Fishing Camps

Located in the Hovsgol region of Northern Mongolia, we have exclusive permission for fishing three beats on one of the best Taimen rivers in Mongolia. Our Taimen fishing camps consist of traditional Mongolian gers (yurts), enabling us to provide a uniquely Mongolian experience in a genuinely eco-friendly camp. Gers are cozy felt-wrapped tents around 5m in diameter, and are heated with a wood-stove. The comfortable guest bedrooms are gers sleeping two or three guests, and equipped with single beds, sheets and blankets.

At the camps we have over 100km of river to explore, by all-terrain vehicle or drift-boat, in a stunning river valley and canyon. The river has good wading with a rocky or gravel bed, lots of interest and structure, and many cliffs and Taimen pools.

The unique nature of this camp allows it to be completely dismantled and re-erected at a different location on the river, allowing us to fish different beats at different stages of the season, and to pack away the camp at the end of the season, ensuring that our environmental impact is minimized.

One ger is equipped as a shower house, with two hot showers supplied with ample hot water from a wood fired boiler at surprisingly good pressure. A large ger serves as the dining room. The camp is supplied with fresh meat, fruit, salad, and vegetables every week. Meals include a range of tasty European and Mongolian dishes, and cold beer and wine is served at dinner, included in the price. Lunches are typically a picnic taken on the river bank.

From the camp there is good hiking, horse riding and bird-watching, and in June the wildflowers are stunning; non-anglers and companions can have an interesting and enjoyable stay.

Mongolia Fly Fishing weeks

Our fly-fishing weeks at the taimen camps are designed for discerning yet adventurous fly-fishers, who want guided fishing for the prime fishing weeks in the season, and who appreciate good camp accommodation with a comfortable bed, hot showers, great food, and professional organisation.

The fly-fishing is a combination of wading and drift-boat fishing from inflatable rafts. There are a number of good taimen pools close to each of the camps, and we will drive further a field each day in the camp’s 6WD truck, or take the drift boats. The drift boats are customized inflatable rafts are equipped with rowing frame and casting seats for two anglers. The fishing programme is varied through the season allowing us to fish different beats and avoid over-fishing the same pools. You will be accompanied during the day by one of the camp’s Mongolian or Western guides, who will show you the good pools, row the raft, select good flies and lures, and help you to land and photograph your catch. Mongolian Taimen

The Hucho taimen is the largest salmonid fish in the world; an exclusively freshwater fish found in Siberia and Mongolia. Now endangered over much of its range, healthy populations can still be found in remote parts of Russia and Mongolia. Taimen are a long-lived fish, living to well over 30 years, but are found at relatively low population densities, as they are essentially a non-migratory fish. Their size, and slow growth rates make them susceptible to over-exploitation and ecosystem damage.
The average sized Taimen in the rivers we fish are around 28 to 30 inches long (70 - 80 cm) and 10 to 12 lbs, there are many trophy Taimen over 40 inches (100 cm) or 20 lbs, and we regularly catch 47 to 50 inch taimen on flies (120 - 130 cm). The largest reported sport caught Mongolian taimen in recent years were around 62 inches (160 cm), but these massive fish are very rare.

Taimen Conservation

It is essential that Taimen caught are returned so that healthy Taimen populations are conserved for the future. Taimen fishing at our camps is strictly catch and release. We rest pools, and fish different beats through the season to ensure the Taimen are not over-fished. We also contribute to local community development in the areas that we fish to demonstrate to local people that catch and release fly-fishing can be a sustainable alternative to poaching.

We have collaborated with other professional Mongolia fly-fishing outfitters to establish the Association of Mongolia Angling Guides. Our aim is to work to conserve Mongolia’s cultural and environmental heritage through responsible angling tourism, and to provide quality sport fishing experiences through the conservation of Mongolia’s rivers.

Taimen Research

The Taimen Conservation Fund is implementing a major conservation and research project on the Eg-Uur River Watershed aimed at creating a sustainable catch and release taimen fishery and establishing a model for taimen conservation in Mongolia. Research is being undertaken by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Nevada-Reno, and the University of California-Davis, and the Mongolian Institute of Geoecology.

The 5-year study will assess population status, migrations, and threats to healthy populations of taimen, and the role of taimen as a part of the broader ecosystem. Information produced by the science team will be used to develop a natural resource management plan for the region.
